Svenska slöjdföreningen (the Swedish craft association), founded in 1845, attempted early on to raise the standard of Swedish craftsmanship by creating pattern designs by prominent artists and craftsmen. At what was known as the home exhibition held at Liljevalchs in 1917, the association presented this wallpaper pattern designed by architect Uno Åhrén. With its links to all the pattern types and its strict, stylised nature which separates these leafy tendrils from the nature-inspired patterns of the Art Nouveau era are typical for the style ideal of the age – “more beautiful everyday items”.
